Overview



We are seeking a full-time Senior EMC Engineer in our Olathe, KS location.  In this role, you will be responsible for leading the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Certification and/or testing for complex products and/or integrated systems and provides technical leadership for EMC project planning and programs.

 

Aviation

The Aviation team is responsible for demonstrating compliance with High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF) and Lightning for TSO (Technical Standard Order) to support both TC (Type Certificate) and STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) requirements of complex avionics systems.

 

Operations

The Operations team is responsible for partnering with cross functional engineering teams to achieve EMC and radio transmitter certifications.

Essential Functions

  • Lead certification and/or testing of complex products and/or integrated systems including activities such as scheduling, monitoring, tracking and adjusting project plan to meet project deadlines and requirements
  • Prioritize and organize tasks to ensure effective time management and allowance for working on smaller projects in conjunction with main project
  • Review and provide input to certification plans/test methods and monitor test capability and usage and recommend process/equipment improvements
  • Represent Garmin among industry partners, peer groups and regulatory agencies (FAA/EASA/RTCA/GAMA/OEM/Audits/FCC/IEEE) as required
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced EMC Engineers (EMC Engineer 1 & 2)

Aviation

  • Serve as technical leader in contributing input to aircraft certification routes for HIRF & Lightning
  • Provide input into EMC protection and test level for product development efforts
  • Understand FAA conformity and data approval process and assist with preparation of FAA certification forms
  • Perform hardware and software change analysis
  • Coordinate with Garmin STC or OEM TC to develop certification requirements
  • Coordinate with avionics installation teams and provide input into the architecture of installed system to ensure that avionics installations meet HIRF and Lightning requirements and that EMC testing will be applicable to the particulars of the installation
  • Produce and/or supervise the creation of test plans and test reports including definition, documentation and development of test setups that will be used during EMC testing including harnesses, test loads, and definitions of new interfaces
  • Coordinate with EMC test facilities to ensure that testing is scheduled and planned appropriately to meet required objectives
  • Supervise EMC testing at test facilities including recommending personnel staffing, documentation of results and recommending the disposition of any anomalies 

Operations

  • Partner with project management for delivery of best-in-class GPS navigation, HD traffic, wireless video, radar and driving recorder platforms as well as connected services using technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Wi-Fi
  • Create and implement complex test plans for major product development programs
  • Contribute to advanced regulatory and standards research on new technologies, markets and geographic regions
  • Identify compliance related risks, effectively communicate the threat and suggest best means for avoiding or reducing the risk
  • Partner with the Compliance Engineering team to determine general approach and specific solutions to compliance problems

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Demonstrated skills and/or training in project management
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be positive, detail/quality oriented, organized, proactive, analytical, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to generate and support pragmatic solutions that meet Garmin’s market launch requirements, while maintaining high quality standards

Desired Qualifications

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)

Aviation

  • Knowledge and/or experience with DO 160 Sections 20 (Radio Frequency Susceptibility (Radiated and Conducted), Sections 22 (Lightning Induced Transient Susceptibility), and Sections 22 and/or Sections 23 (Lightning Direct Affects)
  • Designated Engineering Representative (DER) or Unit Member (UM) status in HIRF and Lightning categories
  • Knowledge and/or experience of the following: EASA HIRF and lightning requirements, SAE ARP5412, 5413 and 5583
  • Pilot License

Operations

  • iNARTE certification in EMC and/or Product Safety
  • Past participation on a standards-writing committee
